What Is the Stages of Change Model?

Here’s how we apply a proven framework in our youth substance use program

Hallmark Youthcare is committed to helping children and teens become the best versions of themselves through adolescent behavioral health services. One way we help overcome substance use is the Stages of Change Model — a proven framework that helps patients change behaviors rather than simply abstaining from harmful substances. Here’s a closer look at our approach.

What Is the Stages of Change Model?

Our ASAM-certified substance use treatment program employs the Stages of Change approach to help our patients overcome their addiction. We break down these stages into the following:

  1. Pre-contemplation. The individual is not yet considering change or is unaware they need change.
  2. Contemplation. The patient recognizes the problem and thinks about making a change.
  3. Preparation. Individuals take small steps toward changing their behaviors.
  4. Action. The individual actively modifies the behavior and environment.
  5. Maintenance. They work to sustain the new behavior (this stage lasts for months or years).

Understanding these stages allows healthcare providers, counselors, and support networks to offer the appropriate guidance and interventions. It’s also important to acknowledge that setbacks are common. It’s normal to cycle through stages and even relapse, at which point our care team will evaluate what triggered the regression, reassess the patient’s motivation and barriers, and develop stronger coping strategies.

How We Use the Stages of Change Model at Hallmark Youthcare

As part of our substance use program for youth, we apply the Stages of Change Model in tailoring our treatment plans to each patient. This helps to build accountability with each individual and provides them the tools they need to thrive outside of our facility.
