How to Support a Friend with Mental Health Issues

June 19, 2023

Learn some simple ways to support a friend through their ups and downs.

Mental health problems often manifest during the teen years. Entering an adolescent residential treatment center in Richmond can provide the care and attention a teen needs in certain cases. In others, the support of a friend can go a long way for someone who’s struggling with depression. Here are some ways you can help.

Get them involved in something fun

Start with a change of scenery or schedule. Whether it’s going to a new place or just spending time together, it might be enough to take their mind off things. If they decline, don’t give up. Keep inviting them to go out and participate in activities with friends.

Notify an adult

Sometimes, feelings of depression are temporary—the result of a bad grade, not making the team, or a messy breakup. But sometimes, depression doesn’t go away. If mental health struggles linger, it might be wise to tell their parents. They can talk to their teen to pinpoint the issue and provide the necessary support.
