October is ADHD Awareness Month.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is more than just symptoms; it’s a lens through which many experience the world. The CDC estimates that 11.3% of children ages 5 to 17 have been diagnosed with ADHD. However, the actual number of youth with ADHD is likely much higher because this condition often goes undiagnosed.

October is ADHD Awareness Month and now is the time to learn how to spot ADHD symptoms and help your child manage their condition.

Learn the signs of ADHD

ADHD can manifest in different ways for different people. Common signs of ADHD in adolescents include but are not limited to:

  • Being easily distracted
  • Fidgeting
  • Avoiding mentally taxing tasks
  • Impulsive behaviors
  • Interrupting
  • Losing things
  • Neglecting tasks
  • Daydreaming
  • Struggling to follow directions
  • Trouble with time management
  • Poor concentration
  • Emotional dysregulation
  • Making careless mistakes

These symptoms don’t necessarily mean a person has ADHD. However, if you notice multiple recurrences of multiple symptoms, it might be worthwhile to get a professional opinion.

Inpatient mental health programs for adolescents provide a structured environment where professionals can conduct comprehensive assessments, leading to accurate diagnoses like ADHD and surfacing potential comorbidities. Our immersive setting allows professionals to observe behaviors over time, capturing the nuances of daily life that may be overlooked in outpatient evaluations.
