From Fights to Friends: Tips for Building Better Sibling Relationships

December 13, 2024

Help your kids master the art of getting along.

Siblings fight. They argue, annoy each other, and get on each other’s nerves. It’s normal behavior—to an extent.

However, siblings who fight constantly might be suffering from underlying issues. The good news: there are things you can do to foster better relationships and keep the peace.

Tips for Improving Sibling Friendships

No sibling relationship is perfect. However, you can help your kids become better friends by using these tips:

  • Create clear schedules to manage conflicts, especially involving shared resources like TVs or toys.
  • Praise good behavior while avoiding giving attention to complaining, tattling, or whining.
  • Have open discussions about fairness and equality when rules may differ between siblings (e.g., a younger sibling has an earlier bedtime).
  • Encourage siblings to spend time with each other to help them bond and work as a team.
  • Don’t overburden older siblings with responsibilities involving younger siblings.

When siblings do get along, reward them! Consistency is key.
