Learn top tips to recognize and prevent cyberbullying

August is Don't Be a Bully Month. As experts in child and adolescent behavioral health, we’re sharing ways you can help spot and prevent cyberbullies. With teens increasingly spending time online, two in three say they have experienced cyberbullying firsthand. Online bullying and taunting are enough for some teens to contemplate or commit suicide or engage in other harmful behaviors, so it’s essential to learn the signs and know how to step in when necessary.

How to Spot Cyberbullying

Common signs of cyberbullying include:

  • Emotional changes, such as sudden withdrawal from family and friends, noticeable stress and anxiety, or sudden mood changes
  • Behavioral changes, such as changes in eating and sleeping, avoiding electronic devices, or low grades
  • Social changes, such as deleting social media or avoiding social situations that used to be enjoyable
  • Physical signs, including a sudden loss or damage of personal belongings or signs of self-harm

These signs seen repetitively over time could indicate something serious. Never wait to step in and talk about them.

Tips for Stopping Cyberbullies

Whether your teen is being bullied or doing the bullying, there are things you can do to prevent the situation from becoming worse.

  • Encourage open communication and be clear about what respectful online behavior looks like
  • Establish trust so they feel comfortable reporting cyberbullying
  • Teach teens about the impact of cyberbullying
  • Keep an eye on their online activities
  • Encourage them to use privacy settings on social media
  • Set clear guidelines for internet use
  • Help them develop coping skills

In some cases, cyberbullying can become physically dangerous. Our professional treatment programs can help youth build resilience and change harmful behaviors. Contact us today to learn more.
