Talking is the first step toward healing

Adolescence can be a tumultuous time, filled with rapid changes and uncertain futures. As parents, teachers, or caregivers, it's crucial to help teens talk about their feelings as they navigate this challenging period of life. Learn how to talk to your teen about mental health issues, then use the following conversation starters to get them to reciprocate.

How to Get Your Teen Talking about Mental Health

Many teens struggle to put their feelings and thoughts into words. In many cases, they want to talk about it but aren’t sure when or how. The following questions may help:

1. I’ve noticed you’ve seemed a bit off lately. Is something bothering you?

2. Is there a particular situation or event that's been causing you stress or anxiety?

3. I've noticed some changes in your behavior. Is there something going on that you'd like to discuss?

4. What activities or hobbies help you when you’re feeling down?

5. I’ve struggled with depression/stress/anxiety before. It happens, but there are ways we can improve it. Let’s talk about it.

Use these conversation starters to inspire other questions to help your teen open up and realize they’re not alone. When initiating a conversation about mental health, try to create a non-judgmental safe space. Don’t be afraid to share your own vulnerabilities, but ultimately you want to listen and help them articulate their thoughts and feelings.
