How to Talk to Teens About Mental Health Issues

November 10, 2023

Use these tips to help teens feel confident in getting help

“I’m fine” is a common phrase in teenagers’ vocabulary, and sometimes it’s true. But when sadness turns into despair and stress becomes crippling anxiety, parents need to have an open dialogue about mental health issues and their impact if left alone.

Tips for Talking About Mental Health with Teens

There is no “right time”’ to talk about mental health. It’s something you simply need to prioritize. Schedule some time to talk with your teen, then use the following tips to steer the conversation:

  • Create a safe space where no topic is off limits.
  • Let them know it’s not their fault they’re having mental health issues, nor are they alone.
  • Work together toward solutions and be honest about the consequences that not addressing these issues can create.
  • Don’t downplay mental health. Be open to hearing how your teen is feeling.
  • Help them find other trusted adults to talk to—they don’t always want to tell their parents everything.

Taking the Next Step Toward Healing
