5 Tips for Overcoming Teenage Defiance

April 29, 2024

Parenting doesn’t have to be a daily mind battle

Defiant teens can be a daily challenge for parents, but there’s usually a reason why teens behave this way. Here’s how you can effectively parent a defiant teen without losing your mind.

Defiance, Defined

Defiance encompasses a spectrum of behaviors, from simple disobedience to more risky actions. It might be a one-off event, or it could be a sign of oppositional defiant disorder, a condition that may improve with adolescent behavioral health treatment.

Tips for Overcoming Defiance

Punishments or using your “mom voice” might not be enough to overcome defiance. Instead, try these tips to create immediate and long-lasting results.

  • Understand the reason for the defiance rather than just handing out punishments.
  • Avoid reacting emotionally, as this can add fuel to their fire.
  • Motivate good behavior with rewards.
  • Match the consequence to the “crime.”
  • Give them the tools they need to change, such as family or individual therapy.

Defiance can often be a call for help. Make sure you and your teen attack the problem from the same side, not in opposition to each other.

When to Seek Professional Help

In some cases, especially when your teen exhibits risky behavior toward themselves or others, it’s best to seek therapy or other professional help. Therapists and behavioral specialists can help you and your teen find the root cause of defiance and work toward better solutions, together.
