What You Should Know About Teen Vaping

September 15, 2023

Vaping isn't "safe smoking"

What was once considered a trendy alternative to smoking cigarettes has now become an alarming epidemic—especially among teens. Sleek designs, enticing flavors, and deceptive marketing tactics make it seem harmless, but a growing body of research shows otherwise. There’s no time like the present to talk to your teen about the dangers of vaping, including severe lung injuries, addiction, and long-term health risks.

What is Vaping?

Vaping refers to the act of inhaling and exhaling vapor produced by an electronic cigarette. Unlike cigarettes, which burn tobacco and produce smoke, e-cigarettes heat a liquid (called vape juice or e-liquid) that contains nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals.

Vaping eliminates some harmful chemicals found in cigarettes (such as tar and carbon monoxide), but this doesn't make it risk-free. There are potential health risks associated with vaping, including nicotine addiction.

Teen Vaping Stats

Despite having to be 18 years or older to purchase vaping products, the rise of teen vape use is alarming:

  • 3 million middle and high school students (14.1% of teens) use tobacco products
  • One in four teen users smoke e-cigarettes daily
  • More than 20% of teens think vaping is harmless and non-addictive
