Therapies We Use in Child and Adolescent Behavioral Healthcare

Here’s how Hallmark Youthcare approaches adolescent care

Child and adolescent behavioral health needs are unique to each of our patients. Assessment and diagnostic services take a multi-faceted approach to uncover and address root causes. Of course, this also means that our treatment options are just as personalized, ensuring we cater to the whole child and not just singular symptoms.

Here’s a closer look at the therapies we provide at Hallmark Youthcare and how they contribute to a well-rounded inpatient treatment program.

Our Approach to Adolescent Behavioral Health Therapies

After reviewing each patient’s health history and conducting research-based assessments and clinical evaluations, our treatment team (including the attending psychiatrist, clinical therapist, nurse, teacher, treatment team specialist, and activity therapist) develop a personalized care plan. Our care team may recommend one or more of the following therapies as part of our adolescent behavioral health treatment:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This therapy intends to change negative patterns of thinking and behavior. Trauma-focused CBT provides psychoeducation, such as addressing distorted beliefs and developing a trauma narrative, in a safe environment.
  • Family Therapy. Getting support and buy-in from family members can help with internal healing. Plus, caregivers can help children put their newly learned skills into practice in everyday life.
  • Behavioral Therapy. This therapy focuses on changing unhealthy behaviors through positive reinforcement and conditioning techniques.
  • Motivational Interviewing. We dig deep to learn what instills motivation and change, which is unique to each patient.
  • Medication. We prescribe medication when needed as part of a larger treatment program.

Each of our offered therapies has been identified by the Virginia Commission on Youth as an effective evidence-based treatment.
