Overcoming the Stigmas of Adolescent Mental Health

May 13, 2024

Learn more about the current landscape of adolescent mental health and how to help

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Hallmark Youthcare believes that recognition and awareness are the first steps to a healthier, brighter future. Mental health conditions are on the rise in youth, and while programs like our child and adolescent behavioral health services can help, we believe prevention can be the best medicine. Help us tackle the stigma of teen mental health, starting with understanding how prevalent these conditions are.

The Recent Trends in Teen Mental Health are Alarming

Self-harm, a lack of self-esteem, substance use, and even thoughts of suicide are more common among teens than you may realize. According to data from the CDC and KFF:

  • 42% of students feel constantly sad or hopeless
  • 29% experience poor mental health
  • More than 1 in 5 teens seriously considered suicide
  • More than 1 in 10 attempted suicide
  • Drug overdose deaths among adolescents doubled between 2018 and 2022

In fact, the problem has skyrocketed to the point where the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a National State of Emergency in Child and Adolescent Mental Health in 2021.
