Raise awareness and learn how to help youth suffering from PTSD

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) develops in some people after experiencing a scary or shocking event (such as a car accident or abuse). For teens, PTSD may impact them for the rest of their lives if they don’t get the proper treatment.

Hallmark Youthcare specializes in adolescent behavioral health, including trauma-informed care for PTSD in Richmond, VA. This month, we encourage you to learn the signs of PTSD and what to do to help your teen overcome it.

Signs of PTSD

Anyone can develop PTSD after a traumatizing event, but not all events cause PTSD. If your teen has had a harrowing experience, they may have PTSD if they:

  • Experience flashbacks
  • Have recurring memories or dreams
  • Have invading thoughts of the event that interfere with daily life
  • Show physical signs of stress
  • Stay away from the event’s location
  • Are easily startled
  • Have difficulty sleeping
  • Struggle to concentrate
  • Constantly feel tense
  • Socially isolate themselves
  • Have exaggerated feelings

PTSD persists for longer than one month and impacts the person’s ability to lead a normal life.
