How to Help Adolescents Manage Holiday Stress

December 6, 2024

Holidays can invite anxiety and depression, but these tips can help your child find peace and comfort.

The holidays should be a time of joy and celebration for everyone. But for children or teens who are struggling with mental or physical health, insecurities, body issues, eating disorders, or other stress, the holidays aren’t as magical as they should be.

Kids may fear inappropriate questions or comments from family members they don’t see often. Though these comments may seem innocent or well-meaning, probing can make them feel uncomfortable, lead to unnecessary stress, and ruin their holiday experience.

Tips for Managing Youth Holiday Stress

In addition to caring for your child’s mental health during the holidays, parents can offer extra support and maintain the magic of the season.

  • Set expectations for communication and participation in family gatherings.
  • Explain your expectations for behaviors to avoid conflicts.
  • Let your hosts know what to expect from your kids, such as food allergies or conversational topics that are off-limits.
  • Give your kids an “out” if they start feeling uncomfortable.
  • Keep them occupied with planned activities so they don’t become bored.
  • Learn the menu ahead of time and make sure your kids have foods they’ll eat.

It’s also helpful to discuss with your children why the holidays are important and what you all expect to get out of the experience. With goals in mind, you can focus on enjoying the moment rather than dreading it.

When Youth Mental Health Care Makes Sense

Holiday stress can happen to anyone, but it may more heavily impact adolescents who are struggling with deeper internal issues. Inpatient youth mental health treatment can get to the heart of these issues and set them up for lifelong success. Contact us today to learn more.
