Learn how to spot and address bullying and encourage your teen to speak up

Bullying can have long-lasting effects on its victims, leading to low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts. We treat many teens at our youth residential treatment center in Richmond, VA due to the impact of bullying, and we believe these cases are 100% preventable.

Signs of Bullying in Teens

Bullying doesn’t always look like fist fights and name-calling. Some signs to watch for include:

  • Loss of friends
  • Avoidance of social situations
  • Unexplainable injuries
  • Loss of personal items (e.g., shoes, clothes, books)
  • Feeling sick or faking illness
  • Low self esteem
  • Desire to skip school

Noticing several of these signs simultaneously could indicate your child is struggling with a bully.

Signs Your Teen is a Bully

Your child might be bullying others if he/she:

  • Has friends who are known bullies
  • Are increasingly aggressive
  • Avoid accepting responsibility for their actions
  • Has new belongings or money they can’t explain
  • Gets in trouble with teachers or principals often
