A Typical Day in an Inpatient Adolescent Psychiatric Treatment Program

Here’s what families can expect for their teen undergoing in-house psychiatric treatment

Hallmark Youthcare has helped hundreds of teens and their families improve mental health in Richmond and live a higher quality of life, thanks to our adolescent residential treatment program. We know being away from your child or teen while they’re receiving care can be a stressful time — for both of you — so we’d like to shine a light on their experience while in our care.

A Day in the Life at a Teen Psychiatric Residential Treatment Program

Adolescent patients come to us for a myriad of reasons: trauma, loss, depression, and substance use disorders, to name a few. Regardless of their issues, we take a tailored approach to their treatment.

A typical day includes the following:

  • Individual, group, and family therapies
  • Psychoeducation sessions, such as anger management, social skills, and moral reasoning
  • Restorative activities like yoga, music, and community outings
  • Educational services at our on-campus school, McAfee Academy, an accredited member of the Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Education Facilities (VAISEF)

We follow a daily structure to build predictability and confidence among our patients and have 24/7 psychiatrist and nursing coverage.

Our Approach to Total Care

While treating the cause and symptoms of your adolescent’s mental health is essential, we also believe in caring for the whole individual beyond their mental health. This means ensuring they receive appropriate nutrition, have time for leisure and recreation, and build connections with peers and counselors they trust and with whom they can openly share their feelings. We also strongly encourage weekly family visitation.
We teach healthy habits, develop coping skills, and provide the education to support them in the future so they can live happy, healthy, and full lives.
