Anger doesn’t have to be the default.

Adolescents often feel like they carry the weight of the world on their shoulders. As grown-ups, we know some feelings get blown out of proportion. But they matter to the person experiencing them, so it’s our job to help them navigate their feelings, especially when situations cause anger and potential harm.

Let’s look at some ways to help youth deal with big feelings in a healthy manner.

Know that Big Emotions Are Normal

Anger is just as important as happiness, sadness, joy, and excitement. See your angry child as a real person with normal feelings, and don’t take it personally. Help them know these feelings will pass.

Find the Cause

Help your child feel comfortable talking about their anger. Give them coping skills and be available to listen. Always take their struggles seriously, even if they don’t appear to be.

Don’t Ignore It

Address their angry feelings and ask questions. Ignoring it only lets the anger fester and doesn’t help your child learn coping skills.
