Overcoming childhood trauma is key to leading a healthier adult life

June is PTSD Awareness Month, and beyond recognizing the signs of this mental condition, it’s equally important to know how to offer help to those experiencing it. Teens and youth can develop PTSD symptoms after a traumatic event, such as a car accident or natural disaster. Learn the signs of PTSD in youth, then read on to help teens find healthy ways to cope.

6 Ways to Help Adolescents Cope with PTSD

Inpatient adolescent behavioral health can be one step toward healing, but there are other ways you can help inside the home before and after our treatment programs. These include:

  • Create a safe space and reassure them that they are safe and loved.
  • Try to maintain a daily routine to promote a sense of normalcy.
  • Help them build a network of support, including peer groups and trusted adults.
  • Validate their feelings so they feel comfortable sharing with you.
  • Channel their feelings through creative outlets like art and music.
  • Encourage open communication, yet respect their requests for privacy if they do not want to talk about their feelings.
  • Be patient and know that quick relief is not usually feasible.

If you suspect your child has PTSD, do not delay support. The sooner you can start conversations, the sooner you can help provide relief.
