Treating anxiety early can lead to a more productive and healthy life

Anxiety is the most common mental health disorder among teens. Roughly 15% of teens will experience a clinical form of anxiety by age 18. Working with a child and adolescent behavioral health professional is a good start, but you also need to know when it’s time to call one for support. Spotting the symptoms early can help you help your teen before their condition worsens (and becomes harder to treat).

Learn the Signs of Teen Anxiety

Everyone gets nervous from time to time. However, serious anxiety can interfere with your teen’s daily life. Common signs to look for include:

  • Irritability
  • Restlessness
  • Excessive worry or fear about life (e.g., grades, school, friends, college)
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Brain fog
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Social withdrawal
  • Substance abuse
  • Irrational fears
  • Perfectionism
  • Changes in eating habits
  • Panic attacks
  • Avoidance of certain people or places
  • A constant need for reassurance

Experiencing one or two of these symptoms occasionally might not be cause for worry. But seeing them on a near-constant basis could mean it’s time to get professional help.

If your teen is showing several of the above signs of anxiety, it’s wise to get the opinion of a child and adolescent behavioral health professional.
