Open, non-judgmental dialogue can change their lives for the better

Talking to teens about substance use can be a delicate and challenging conversation. It’s also one that could save their life. Here’s how you can equip your teen with the knowledge and skills to make safe choices.

Make Time to Talk

Springing a sensitive subject on your teen can feel confrontational and overwhelming. Instead, tell them you want to talk to them about drugs and alcohol and ask when a good time would be. Let them know they’re not in trouble, you simply want to discuss.

Set the Right Expectations

Be clear about how you feel about your teen using drugs and alcohol. Let them know your rules about substance use and any consequences for breaking those rules. This can make it easier for teens feeling pressured by friends to say no. You might also explain the reasons for your rules, such as caring about their health or simply because certain activities are illegal for teens.

Let Them Ask Questions

Be open to hearing their questions (or confessions) without judgment. Take this opportunity to empower good decisions and ensure they understand the weight of substance use.

Show Your Willingness to Help

If your teen shares they’re struggling with substance use in Richmond, remain calm, be their advocate, and know help is available. Our youth substance abuse program provides a safe space for education, recovery, and a life free of addiction. Contact us to learn more.
